Elevate Salon: Where Patients Go to Find Comfort

Every day, thousands of patients at Roswell Park navigate a unique and difficult journey through cancer treatment. With that treatment comes new obstacles — and often side effects like hair loss. The Roswell Park care team focuses on treating the whole person, not just the cancer, meaning a patient’s quality of life during treatment is just as important as the medicine they receive.

Elevate Salon at Roswell Park is one of many resources that supports patients during their cancer journey. Those experiencing hair loss can access hats, wigs and other head coverings at no cost to them. They can also book appointments with the salon’s New York State-licensed stylists who assist with hair transitions, helping patients feel comfortable and confident throughout their cancer journey.

To date, this donor-funded oasis and its dedicated staff and volunteers have provided more than 2,200 wigs and head coverings and 1,200 individual stylist and consult appointments for patients experiencing hair loss due to treatment. That’s not including the countless salon tours and drop-ins for information, guidance and solace.

Real patients turn to Elevate Salon every day for support, and more than 1,500 patients have found peace and hope since it first opened in 2022.

Patients Find Comfort at Elevate Salon

Laura Garrett, an Elevate Salon patient

One of the patients who found comfort at Elevate Salon is 28-year-old Laura Garrett, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Salon staff gave her a seriously needed respite during the challenges of treatment. They helped her customize wigs for every mood and find enough hats to last a lifetime. In turn, this gave her the courage she needed to face her diagnosis.

“I’m going to come out of this stronger. I’m going to be able to tackle this and anything else that comes my way. I’m not going to let this ruin my life,” she says.

Another patient, 34-year-old Adam Kreutinger, is a puppeteer, teacher, husband and dad of two little ones. Adam’s cancer journey began at a volleyball game with his fellow teachers in the summer of 2022 when he started to experience seizures. His doctors found a grade three astrocytoma, a brain tumor and a lifelong disease. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy pills have not been able to completely remove his cancer.

Adam and his wife, Maria, discovered resources at Roswell Park that helped their family navigate cancer together, with one of those resources being Elevate Salon. When Adam lost his hair, the staff at the salon helped him find hats that suited him and allowed him to truly express himself, just like he always has.

Despite the challenges, Adam is finding ways to enjoy every moment with his family and cherish the time he has.

“Try to find something you love and do it. Keep doing it. You never know how much time you do have, so if you can find something that really makes you happy, don’t let anything stop you from doing it,” he says.

Thank you for going Bald for Bucks!

Your fundraising efforts make a real and lasting impact in the lives of people just like Laura and Adam. Support for resources like Elevate Salon is made possible, in part, by the generous contributions made to your fundraiser by family and friends. To make it even more impactful, every dollar gets amplified by $23 in external funding, meaning your support goes even further. What better reason to go Bald for Bucks?
